What is the Member Responsibility Amount (MRA)?

The Member Responsibility Amount (MRA) is a key part of how EverTrust Health Share works. It represents the portion of eligible medical expenses a member is responsible for before sharing may begin.

Your MRA is selected at the time of enrollment and is tied to your monthly contribution.

How the MRA Works Within a Sharing Request

The MRA applies on a per-member, per-incident basis through a Sharing Request. A Sharing Request includes all eligible medical expenses related to a single condition, illness, or event. Before any expenses may be considered for sharing, the MRA must first be satisfied.

For example, if you experience a medical event, all related bills are added to your MRA. Once that amount has been met, eligible expenses beyond the MRA may be shared in accordance with the Member Guidelines.

To help protect members from high medical costs, EverTrust includes an important safeguard. Each household is responsible for no more than two MRAs within a rolling 12-month period. After two MRAs have been met, additional eligible Sharing Requests exceeding the minimum threshold may be shared without requiring another MRA.

Maternity Sharing Requests and pre-existing condition Sharing Requests do not count toward this two-MRA safeguard and are not eligible for it.

What Is an MRA Reduction?

EverTrust values members who actively engage with our Advocacy Team and take the initiative to utilize self-pay strategies to reduce the cost of their medical care.

When you lower your healthcare expenses, those savings extend beyond your individual situation, they benefit the entire community. As part of our cooperative health-sharing model, members who help reduce overall costs may also be eligible for a reduction to their Member Responsibility Amount (MRA) for a specific Sharing Request.

These reductions are evaluated based on actions that promote fair and reasonable pricing, and exploring cost-saving options.

This approach reflects the cooperative nature of EverTrust, where members play an active role in maintaining affordability and supporting one another.

How to Lower Your MRA

One of the most effective ways to lower your MRA is by making informed decisions before receiving care.

Requesting a Good Faith Estimate allows you to understand pricing upfront and compare providers.

Choosing fair-cost facilities, such as outpatient or surgical centers, instead of higher-cost hospital settings when appropriate, can significantly reduce expenses.

Presenting as a self-pay patient and asking about prepayment or bundled pricing options can also lead to meaningful savings. Many providers offer discounts when costs are discussed and agreed upon in advance.

Another important strategy is exploring hospital assistance programs. Many nonprofit hospitals offer assistance that can reduce or even eliminate portions of your bill based on income or the size of the expense. These programs are often underutilized but can significantly lower your total cost of care.

Members who take advantage of these strategies and work with EverTrust to manage pricing may be eligible for an MRA reduction.

Why It Matters

Lowering your MRA reduces your personal financial responsibility for a Sharing Request and supports the sustainability of the EverTrust community.

The built-in safeguard limiting MRAs helps provide additional protection for households facing multiple medical events in a given year.

A Proactive Approach Makes the Difference

MRA reductions are not automatic. They are the result of thoughtful planning, early communication, and cost-conscious decisions.

By requesting estimates, exploring hospital assistance, and working closely with EverTrust before receiving care, you can take control of your healthcare costs and improve your overall experience.

The Bottom Line

Lowering your Member Responsibility Amount starts with understanding how it works within a Sharing Request and taking proactive steps to manage costs.

With tools like provider pricing, self-pay strategies, hospital assistance, and the two-MRA household safeguard, members have meaningful ways to reduce their financial responsibility while supporting the community.
