Navigating Emergency Room Visits with EverTrust HealthShare

Emergency room visits are not just about where you go for care, they are about how you navigate the process from the beginning. Taking a few intentional steps during and after your visit can make everything that follows significantly smoother, while missing those steps can create delays, confusion, and unnecessary back-and-forth. EverTrust is designed to work well in emergency situations, but understanding how to navigate the process correctly is what enables it to perform at its best.

When Emergency Care Makes Sense

Emergency rooms are designed for serious situations that require immediate attention. In those moments, the decision is simple. For non urgent needs, there are often more cost effective options like urgent care or provider offices, and choosing the appropriate setting when possible helps keep costs lower for both you and the community.

What to Do During Your Visit

At the time of service, there are a few important steps that can make a meaningful difference. You should present as a self-pay patient and request to be billed directly. Be sure to ask for an itemized bill and confirm that any available self-pay discounts are applied. In addition to discounts, it is important to explore any available self-pay support options providers may offer, as many hospitals and facilities have programs that can further reduce costs and potentially lower your Member Responsibility Amount (MRA).

One of the most important steps is setting up your patient portal with the hospital or provider as soon as possible. Do not wait for billing to arrive by mail, as many providers no longer send paper statements. Your patient portal is where you can access itemized bills, medical records, provider notes, and any available resources related to your visit. It also becomes the primary way you will track and manage your account, including making payments once sharing has occurred.

Keeping organized records from the start and using the patient portal proactively will make the rest of the process much more efficient.

After the Visit

Once your situation has stabilized, you should notify EverTrust and submit a Sharing Request as soon as possible. Include all available documentation such as itemized bills with discounts applied, provider notes, and any medical records from your visit. Many of these documents can be downloaded directly from your patient portal, which is why setting it up early is so important.

Submitting a complete request upfront allows the review process to begin without delay and helps avoid follow up requests for missing information.

Understanding Your Responsibility

Emergency room visits are subject to your Member Responsibility Amount, and eligible expenses may be considered for sharing after that amount has been met. Once your request is submitted, it will go through the Determination Process, where it is reviewed according to the Member Guidelines to determine eligibility for sharing.

This process is designed to create consistency and fairness across the community while keeping expectations clear for members. Choosing the appropriate level of care when possible and following the right steps during your visit both contribute to a more efficient outcome.

A Process That Works When You Do

Emergency situations are unpredictable, but the process that follows does not have to be. EverTrust is built to support members through real-life healthcare experiences, and when you take the right steps early, everything from documentation to sharing becomes more streamlined. Focus on handling your visit the right way from the start, use the tools available to you, and let the process work as it was designed to, knowing that our advocacy team is also there to support you along the way if you need guidance.
